Our inspiration

1300s · the cellarThe empty space in the barrel

Wine evaporates through the wood. The gap between the liquid and the lid is the ullage — what is missing to fill it. Too much of it means oxygen, and oxygen ruins the wine, so cellar masters measured it obsessively.

1960s · orbitThe engine swallows vacuum

In zero gravity the propellant doesn't rest on the floor of the tank: it floats in globules, and the ullage can sit right over the pump inlet. Light the main engine like that and it fails.

Small auxiliary motors fired for a few seconds before translunar injection, settling the fuel against the outlet. That minimal push was the condition for everything else. Without it, a stage with all its power was worth nothing.
